Press Media Wire (Press Release) - Oct 11,2009 - PressMediaWire - (Eagle River, Wisconsin) - A beginning reading book from Takeaway Press featuring characters like "Cobweb the Cat," "foxes that sing sad songs," and a truck full of ducks "with lots of spots" has earned recognition from the third annual Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards in the Reading Skills/Literacy category. Designed to honor the year's best children’s books, authors and illustrators, Beehive Reader 1 eclipsed nearly 1,000 entries to be named a Silver award winner. Published by Takeaway Press, Beehive Reader 1 was written by Marie Rippel with Renee LaTulippe, and illustrated by David LaTulipppe and Donna Goeddaeus. The Moonbeam Children's Book Awards are open to authors, illustrators, and publishers of children’s books written in English or Spanish and intended for the North American market. Presented by Jenkins Group and Independent Publisher Online, the Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards are designed to bring increased recognition to exemplary children’s books and their creators, and to support childhood literacy and life-long reading. Moonbeam Awards are presented in 36 categories ranging from alphabet and counting books to young adult fiction. Medals have been awarded to authors, illustrators and publishers from thirty-two U.S. states, five Canadian provinces, and seven countries overseas. "We're couldn't be more proud of Beehive Reader 1,” said co-author Marie Rippel. "We wrote this collection of ten short stories to help the new reader move from phonetic decoding to fluent reading. Beehive Reader 1 gives beginning and remedial readers the successful feeling of being able to read a 'big' book. Characters like 'Cobweb the Cat' were beautifully illustrated by David LaTulipppe and Donna Goeddaeus. We're just so pleased that they and my co-author Renee LaTulippe have been recognized for the quality of their work." “This year’s Moonbeam award winners confirm that books can change children’s lives,” said Moonbeam Awards founder Jerrold Jenkins. “They’ve already had a big impact on the judges and the kids that read them…The Moonbeams are all about rewarding these books and bringing them to the attention of parents, booksellers, librarians – and to the kids themselves.” This is the second recent book award for Takeaway Press. Earlier this year, the publisher's language arts workbook All About Homophones was a finalist for the 2009 Benjamin Franklin Awards for excellence in book publishing.
