If You Can't Read This, You're Not Alone: Educational Author Shares Dyslexia Warning Signs

PressMediaWire - (Eagle River, Wisconsin) - What do Olympian Bruce Jenner, mystery novelist Agatha Christie, and investment guru Charles Schwab have in common? All are among the estimated 10% of the population that may struggle with language-based learning disabilities like dyslexia. "As dyslexics," says author Marie Rippel, "each of them may have struggled to read this. But they're not alone. Figures are hard to come by, but as many as 20 million Americans may have difficulty reading because of issues like dyslexia."

According to the International Dyslexia Association, dyslexia could be involved if someone has difficulty acquiring and using written language. (However, formal testing of reading, language, and writing skills is the only way to confirm a diagnosis of dyslexia.) Often, people with dyslexia display symptoms like these:

• Difficulty repeating multisyllable words.
• Reading words in the wrong order.
• Inserting extra letters or deleting letters in words when spelling or reading.
• Poor reading comprehension.
• Misspelling many common words like said, there, and does.
• Switching the order of letters in a word when spelling (may write speical instead of special).
• Difficulty following instructions that have more than one step.
• Slow, laborious writing with irregularly shaped letters and improper pencil grip.
• Confusing letters with a similar shape, especially the pairs b-d, m-w, and n-u.

Rippel is the author and co-author of several books aimed at early readers, all of which can be beneficial for students with dyslexia. Rippel says she is committed to educating people about dyslexia, a disorder that can make reading, writing, and spelling difficult. "As a member of the International Dyslexia Association, I think it's important to let people know that there is hope for people with learning disabilities like dyslexia."

"Several studies have shown that intense reading intervention can lead to dramatic improvements in reading ability," Rippel says. "Carnegie Mellon researchers studied youngsters who had received a year of concentrated reading instruction," she continues. "Brain scans showed 40 percent more activity in the 'word decoding' areas of the kids' brains. So having your child diagnosed with dyslexia is not an educational death sentence. You can read more about dyslexia on our Web site, www.all-about-spelling.com/dyslexia."

"We created All About Spelling and All About Homophones with dyslexics in mind," says Rippel, "and we know there are a lot of parents using it with their dyslexic students. One mom, a former eighth grade Language Arts teacher and school administrator, told us that in her opinion 'every
teacher in the primary grades should teach spelling with this system. I am convinced that if this were done, we would see a decrease in [learning disability] identifications.' Rippel continues, "We want to get the word out that parents can make a difference—there are resources out there for parents who want to help their children improve in reading, writing, and spelling."
