(PressMediaWire) - Scott Sandland—a California hypnotherapist who serves on staff at Sober Living by the Sea and the Sheets and Paquette dental practice in Newport Beach—was recently presented with the 2009 Innovator in Education Award by the International Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy Association (IMDHA).
Speaking at the IMDHA's annual conference in Florida on May 23, Robert Otte, the organization's CEO, recognized Sandland's achievements as the co-founder and producer of the "Global Hypnosis eSummit" (also known as the HypnoSummit), a first-of-its-kind online hypnosis training conference held March 13-15th, 2009. “With the HypnoSummit, our goal is to make it easy for people to learn more about hypnosis and hypnotherapy. This recognition from the IMDHA tells me that we’re succeeding,” says Sandland.
The online training seminar attracted professional hypnotherapists and hypnosis hobbyists from throughout the U.S. and 18 countries. Taking the form of a "virtual trade show," the HypnoSummit featured live and recorded trainings in topics as diverse as enhancing sports performance, hypnosis for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and building a private hypnotherapy practice. In a post-event survey, 79% of respondents said they would “definitely” attend the next HypnoSummit, and 97% said they would recommend the event to a colleague.
“We looked at the first HypnoSummit as a ‘proof of concept’ event,” says Sandland. “We really just wanted to make sure the technology platform would work before doing our first ‘real’ event in September. I had no idea the first HypnoSummit would be such a success, and I certainly never dreamed I’d win an award for it. I couldn’t be happier.”
Sandland continues, “I’m honored by the IMDHA’s support and recognition. And we’ve planned massive software updates to make sure the next HypnoSummit is even better.”

About Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapists
rely on the mind’s natural ability to become “restfully focused” during
certain states of consciousness, sometimes referred to as the “trance
state.” Healthy people may go into and out of the trance state several
times during the course of the day, often when doing mundane repetitive
tasks such as driving to work or showering. Hypnotherapy uses the
intentional induction of the trance state to help the client effect
permanent, positive changes in thinking or behavior by breaking
unhealthy subconscious patterns.
The American Medical Association, American Psychological Association, and the American Dental Association have all formally recognized the value and benefits of hypnotherapy and its applications. Hypnosis can be particularly effective for the relief of pain and anxiety, and to eliminate phobias. Clinical studies have shown that hypnosis can improve the effectiveness of medical treatments for irritable bowel syndrome and breast cancer, among other illnesses.
