Press Media Wire (Press Release) - Jan 24,2009 - (PressMediaWire) - Today the Third and Fourth Grade winners were revealed in the Hawaii Statehood t-shirt design contest sponsored by www.HawaiiStatehoodApparel.com,
a souvenir apparel wholesaler. The company’s statewide t-shirt design
contest attracted 1,063 entries from schoolchildren from kindergarten
through 12th grade in the Aloha State. Students were invited to create
designs to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Hawaii, which became the
50th U.S. State in August of 1959.
The winning designs for the
third and fourth grade students, along with previously announced
winners in kindergarten, first and second grade, are now on display at www.HawaiiStatehoodApparel.com. The newly announced winners are:
Third Grade: Cecilia, St Ann’s Model School, Kaneohe, Oahu, Hawaii Fourth Grade: Alya, E. B. deSilva Elementary School, Hilo, Hawaii, Hawaii
Winners in the remaining grades will be announced over the next few weeks.
Don Alfano, the founder of HawaiiStatehoodApparel.com,
noted that Cecilia and Alya’s designs were a great expression of the
contest and the state of Hawaii. “Cecilia’s happy red crab, surrounded
by not one, but six sun bright yellow suns, just makes everyone smile,”
says Alfano. “Alya’s design is so clever. It’s an American flag, and
the 50th star is actually a yellow hibiscus. And she even included a
tag line, ‘They Saved The Best For Last.’”
Along with the other
winners, Cecilia and Alya will each receive a $100 U.S. Savings Bond,
plus 50 t-shirts bearing their original artwork.
Along with
the winners, the top two finalists in each grade will have their
designs featured on screen-printed t-shirts available for wholesale
purchase through HawaiiStatehoodApparel.com
starting this month. And each winner’s and finalists’ school will earn
5% of the profits from sales of their winning design, which will be
available in wholesale quantities at www.HawaiiStatehoodApparel.com.
Alfano
said, “We’re so grateful to all the students, teachers, principals and
school administrators who made this Hawaii Statehood t-shirt design
contest possible. And in particular we want to acknowledge those
teachers who used our contest to help enrich their lessons on Hawaii
history.”
Students included a number of classic Hawaii icons in
their Statehood Anniversary designs, including Hawaii's state flag,
Hula dancers, hibiscus flowers, surfboards, tropical sunsets, outrigger
canoes, ukuleles, Kamehameha the Great, palm trees, sea turtles,
beaches, and many other Hawaiian design motifs.
“The Hawaii Statehood Commission is planning a slate of educational events
for 2009,” says Alfano, “and we feel privileged to be supporting their
efforts, encouraging Hawaiian schoolchildren to learn about our
nation’s 50th state.
